Arlington Rhythmic Gymnastics Team qualifies for Junior Olympics

First Coast Rhythmic has had a banner season. In our first year as a USA-Gymnastics competitive club our level 4 team had gymnasts place first in State and Regionals. Three of which earned a spot on the Regional Junior Olympic Team. Making FCRG the team with the largest number of gymnast on the level 4 JO team. Our other 2 gymnasts earned scores high enough to qualify them to attend the Championships as All-Stars.

Level 9 gymnast, Madysen Felber placed 16th out of over 40 competitors at the Level 9 JO's and qualified to the National Qualifiers for level 9 and 10. There she competed against the top level 9's and 10's in the country and barely missed qualifying to Visa Championships.

What's your take on possible Duval school budget cuts?

Faced with about $86.6 million in lost revenue and rising costs, the Duval County School Board is looking into cuts that would affect individual schools and employees. Suggestions include dropping middle school athletics; stopping magnet school bus routes; slashing funding for art, music and P.E. by $1.7 million; cutting health care benefits by $6 million; and reducing workdays for employees. We want to know: are these the right cuts? Should there be different options on the table? Should there be cuts at all?

Scary squirrel

Hello all - I'm the reporter for neighborhoods in the West and North parts of Jacksonville, but I happened to be covering an Arbor Day event last week at Justina Road Elementary School. Just wanted to share a funny story that I didn't include in my article, which will be in print and on this site Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Anyway, the occasion was an Arbor Day program hosted by the city. The mayor and others talked to some kindergartners about trees before going out to finish planting an oak tree on the school's grounds. They had this guy dressed in a huge squirrel costume who came out and was supposed to get the kids excited. One of them got very excited. He started screaming and crying, "No! NO! Get it away from me! Get it out!" Poor kid had to be taken out of the program and missed everything. It was hilarious (not to the kid, I'm sure), but it was funny to see the whole photo-op shaken up. The mayor took it in stride, saying, "My son had the same reaction to Santa."

You gotta love kids. They can be so unpredictable.

What do you think about the constitutional amendment up for a vote on Jan. 29?

This question was recently posed to the Times-Union editorial e-mail group:

We would like your comments on the constitutional amendment up for a
vote on Jan. 29. If passed, the constitutional amendment on property taxes will double
the personal homestead exemption and save the average homestead property
owner about $225 a year. Supporters say government is fat and needs
to be forced to cut spending. Opponents say this approach for cutting taxes is all wrong and that the
potential damage to local government services isn't worth the annual
savings. What is your view and why? Your comments may be used as letters to the editor in either the main
paper or our community sections. If you don't want to be quoted, please say
so.
