What's your take on possible Duval school budget cuts?
Faced with about $86.6 million in lost revenue and rising costs, the Duval County School Board is looking into cuts that would affect individual schools and employees. Suggestions include dropping middle school athletics; stopping magnet school bus routes; slashing funding for art, music and P.E. by $1.7 million; cutting health care benefits by $6 million; and reducing workdays for employees. We want to know: are these the right cuts? Should there be different options on the table? Should there be cuts at all? How concerned are you about what's being suggested? Give us your opinion. First I do not agree with cutting athletics from Middle Schools. That is the one thing today's middle schoolers need is more physical activities and education. Let's cut School Board expenses... i.e. Cell phones. I know city and state employees that don't get a cell phone as part of their jobs. Let's cut travel expenses for all school board employees. Let's increase the heat by 2 degrees during warmer months and decrease it by 2 degrees during the winter months. The state seems to think this is "green" and a good tool for their employees and buildings why not in the schools as well. If the school board after pushing magnet schools is now going to eliminate busing to these schools than they should eliminate ALL busing. AFter all, if a child can't walk to or from a Neighborhood school than why is it considered a neighborhood school!?? I agree with the first post! I had someone the other day tell me that they thought that the real property tax amendment specifically exempted effecting the school system budget. Well, like you, I voted against it! Where do all these people think the money will come from to support not only our schools but our city and state costs as well. As we all know we've been told bills will go out in the next month for our sewage and garbage fees. I only hope our community will come together and fight these thoughless budget cuts our school board is considering. Perhaps as a community we can come up with better ideas. Let's start with posting the current school & school board budgets and open them for dissection.

Has any one suggested that all the board member and superintendent cut their salary. How about not paying for insurance for every employee of the school board. Lets cut P.E. and have more overweight kids then we already do. Art what's that my children don't have that at there schools and they both go to magnet schools. Music my son gets that every other week. Come on did every one that voted for the home owners tax cut realize that it was going to effect schools and city services I did, that's why I voted no.
